American
Revolutionary Artillery
The
Americans were at a great disadvantage at the beginning of the
revolution. Artillery was very scarce and most of what they had was
captured during the French and Indian War, or from the British.
Consequently there was a wide variety and caliber of artillery
pieces. Because of the shortage, cannon sometimes had to be hauled
enormous distances to support a battle. In fact, 60 tons cannon
captured from Fort Ticonderoga was hauled 300 miles over mountainous
terrain for the siege of Boston. This enormous feat was accomplished
by General Henry Knox. His men used ox driven sledges to pull the
cannon over the frozen ground.
