Continental Grand
Union
#A263
Shown here is the Liberty flag, one
of the many variations of "The Continental Grand Union".
Unfortunately they were almost all identical to the British ensign;
therefore when Washington first raised the flag in Boston, the
British assumed the Americans were surrendering. Washington was
mortified and gave orders that henceforth, the flag should only be
flown on special occasions. Sometime later Washington adopted the
flag with the red and white stripes and white stars on a blue
background.
