General
George Washington
Although
born to Virginia aristocracy, he became a dedicated servant of the Virginia
Commonwealth. At sixteen he joined Virginia's militia and saw
fighting in the Seven Years War under General Edward Braddock, where
his leadership abilities attained him the rank of major before he
was 21. He was recognized as a leader by most colonialists,
therefore when hostilities erupted in 1775, he was the logical
choice. Reluctantly he took command of the 18,000, mostly untrained
civilian troops against overwhelming, professional British forces.
Somehow Washington and his gallant men overcame lack of food, proper
uniforms, weapons and munitions. They suffered for eight long years
and after the trials of Valley Forge they renewed their efforts to
eventually defeat the British.

Rogers Rangers
These men were the predecessors to today's
modern rangers. They were formed in 1775 to fight in the French and
Indian war. Although they were disbanded before the revolution, many
of the colonist received valuable combat experience in the rangers.
The rangers learned many of their tactics from the Indians, and many
of them are still used today.
